Day 12 – Back to Reykjavik

Today I had to return the car and somehow get all my gear back to the bike. I met up with Unnur and stashed my panniers in her garage before taking the car down to the local gas station where I grabbed a high powered water brush thing and destroyed any evidence of where the car had gone. Inside the engine compartment, underneath the car, inside all the nooks and crannies of each door, this car was going to be a blank slate. I had treated it well and it had acquired no damage, but I was taking no chances in a country where the excess for rental damage is about $2000. The booking company I had used to reduce that excess to $0 forbid unpaved driving and that simply isn’t feasible in Iceland due to patches of road turning into gravel with little warning.

Thankfully the return went well, and soon I was hiking back to the garage to see if I could ride a bike without crippling myself.

The first few minutes were surprisingly okay, so I loaded the bike up and made a new plan to catch a bus that would take me just past the West Fjords, where I would continue the tour.

The 10km ride to the bus station was tense, and I could definitely feel that my knees were sore and tender. But it was doable, and I made it to the station without anything approaching the pain I felt before.

A short while later I was on a 6 hour ride to Blonduos. The ride was uneventful save for me accidentally dropping a bag onto someone’s face, and just before 10pm I was dropped off at a petrol station outside Blonduos. The campsite was nearby so I got tucked in, but not before having a chat with a fellow cyclist; Nadine from Germany.
