Day 24 – Husavik to Asbyrgi

The rain had followed me from Myvatn and was pounding on the tent. I pulled out my wet weather gear and prepared for a soggy day.

As it turned out, I was only a few kilometres away from Husavik, and easily could have rolled into town last night when the air was still and dry. Now I had wind and rain to deal with. I fought the wind and made it onto town completely soaked. Husavik might be a lovely little town, but in this rain I couldn’t really see it. I hunted down the campsite and contemplated my next move. I had a bulky peninsula to traverse, and it was going to be getting smashed by the wind. The camp had power and WiFi in a sheltered kitchen area, so I did a bit of shopping before settling down to eat and wait out the weather.

In the evening the weather seemed to be getting better, so I set out yet again. It was a mistake. No more than 5km from the town the wind got worse, and I was being hit by powerful side gusts that would push me out into the centre of the road. This weather was simply too dangerous to keep riding in, so I pulled up the first driveway I could find and asked the owner if I could hide my tent behind their house and wait out the wind. The owner did not speak English, but agreed.

I unwrapped my wet tent and prepared for a cold wet night.
